Cleaning a home in the Phoenix area comes with two challenges that homeowners elsewhere rarely think about. The first is dust: fine, powdery desert dust that settles on furniture, fans, and floors within days of a cleaning. The second is hard water, which leaves white mineral spots on faucets, shower glass, and dishes.
For dust, work from the top down. Ceiling fans, light fixtures, and the tops of door frames come first, then furniture and shelves, and floors last. Use a damp microfiber cloth instead of a dry duster, which tends to push fine dust into the air rather than picking it up.
Window sills, sliding-door tracks, and air-return vents are where dust collects the most. A quick vacuum of these spots every week or two keeps it from building up into a gritty layer. Changing HVAC filters on schedule also makes a noticeable difference, especially after monsoon storms.
For hard water, the key is regular attention. Mineral spots are easy to remove when they're fresh and much harder once they've built up for months. Wiping shower glass and fixtures dry after use helps, and a mild acidic cleaner like diluted vinegar dissolves light build-up on most fixtures. Always check the manufacturer's guidance for natural stone, which acids can damage.
If your fixtures and glass already have heavy build-up, a deep cleaning is the best place to start. After that, a recurring cleaning schedule keeps dust and mineral spots from coming back.
